Dunn's Famous: Safe and Predictable

the pitch

Today we wanted to grab a quick lunch somewhere midway between downtown and the West Island, for logistical reasons, so we decided to pay a visit to Dunn's Famous deli on Decarie.  One of us was also using public transit, so the fact that this longstanding mecca of smoked meat is right in front of Namur metro station on a rainy day helped.

the mood

The place was certainly busy for lunch.  You can expect to wait a couple minutes before being seated.  You can also expect crutches, wheelchairs and portly fellows, as the crowd was certainly on the "old" side.

the food

The long menu contains an expected assortment of deli favorites, such as smoked meat sandwiches, club sandwiches, burgers and many others.  We liked the free refill policy on soda, which was actually surprisingly good for fountain soda.

the verdict

The food at Dunn's is pretty basic and classic; no bells and no whistles.  That's probably why the name has been around for almost a century now; they know what they're doing and they don't need to make any changes.  Let's just call it a neighborhood restaurant, good for the locals, or for a very late-night dinner (this location is open 24/7).
